The town of Heukelum is a stone’s throw from Leerdam and an easy bike ride via Oude Zuiderlingedijk.

If you’re cycling the Linge route, you’ll soon pass by Heukelum’s castle, called Merckenburg. On entering the old fortified town, be sure to take a look at the old city walls which have been beautifully restored. The original wall dates all the way back to 1230, and according to legend was built after a series of raids by amongst others the Vikings.

Scrumptious pretzels

After you’ve had a chance to stroll around the old town and harbour, it’s high time for a Heukelumse krakeling! This is a traditional pretzel baked fresh to a secret recipe by the local baker.

Cap your day with a tasty brew at Brewery´t Kuipertje on Appeldijk. Their tasting room always has several beers to sample. You can also book a group tour of the brewery. But beware: after sampling these delicious brews, the road back to Leerdam may be twice as long!

Foot ferry between Heukelum and Lingedijk

Heukelum has a foot ferry that operates between the quay and De Galgenwaard day-recreation centre in Oosterwijk. View the ferry schedule here.
